Course Description & Lesson Notes

Official Video Description:

Hello everyone and welcome to a new video! With the amazing addition of Merlin to my life, I knew I had to make the sewing room as safe as possible for him, while still keeping its functionality - and so enter the sewing machine cover! I'd been seeing a couple of these different variations going around social media, so I decided to make my own. This is a highly customisable project: you can use plain or patterned fabric, contrasting or matching binding (which can be tape, ribbon, or bias binding), contrasting or matching quilting - or none at all - and with or without pockets. Overall, this simple project added just the right amount of protection to my machines, while still being easy to remove and put on, and Merlin seems entirely disinterested in them now. You will need: Approximately 1 meter or under of fashion fabric (outer fabric) Approximately 1 meter or under of batting or wadding (if quilting) Approximately 1 meter or under of suitable lining Approximately 3-5 meters of binding/tape/ribbon depending on your sewing machine size The steps are roughly as below: 1. Measure your sewing machine and note down your rectangle dimensions. 2. Cut the rectangle from: 1x fashion fabric, 1x batting, 1x lining. I make the batting a little bigger to allow for any shifting during sewing. 3. Pin the fabric layers together, with the batting in the middle, wrong sides together. 4. If quilting, mark your first line of quilting as desired. If you have a quilting guide, use that; if not, mark all your stitching lines to your desired width (mine was 1.5" apart for each sewing line, at a 45 degree angle, to create the diamond effect). Sew those lines. 5. If you want a pocket, measure from the base of your machine to determine pocket height. Mine was 5". Cut a strip of your fashion fabric, lining fabric, and fusible interfacing (if needed). Fuse your outer fabric on the wrong side. Pin pocket pieces together, wrong sides facing each other. Bind, hem, or finish as desired the top edge of the pocket. Position to the cover along the bottom front edge. Baste if needed. 6. Mark your pocket's divisions if you want any. Mine were roughly 4.5" wide. Sew by hand or machine. 7. Cut ties and position four on either long edge of the rectangle. They'll be tied together at the sides to secure the cover. Cover the raw edge with binding/tape/ribbon or finish as you'd like (I topstitched my binding into place, catching the ties in that stitching). 8. Enjoy your cat-safe sewing room!
