I know you've heard of the French Seam. Maybe you've sewn one, or maybe you're curious! It’s one of the more popular seam finishes for giving garments a clean, professional look, inside and out, without needing an overlocker or any other special tools. To create a French Seam, sew wrong sides together first (which I know feels completely backwards at first), trim the seam allowance down, press it, and then flip it right sides together and sew again. This encloses all the raw edges inside, giving you a neat, fully finished seam. French seams work well for: 🪡 Sheer or lightweight fabrics like silk, chiffon or organza 🪡 Garments where the seams may be visible from the outside 🪡 Projects where a smooth, refined interior is preferred It’s a lovely technique to have in your toolkit, especially when you want your sewing to be a touch more couture, on the inside as well as the outside, if you're fabric is sheer and you see the seam finish. It's not good for: -Thick and bulky fabrics -Curved seams like armholes and princess seams -Anything you need to fit as go (more on this in a minute) I like to use the French Seam occasionally as it has places it's really suited to. But, for most applications when I want a seam finish like this, I prefer to use a hand-felled seam finish. (if you want to know more about this one let me know!) Mostly because a French Seam is counterintuitive to sew (I mean you sew the wrong side together!) And, with a French Seam, you cannot fit as you go. Meaning you sew and it, and that's it! No changing or tweaking the fit. Those seams have been sewn, cut and are not going anywhere! But still, a French Seam looks AMAZING when done right! Have you tried a French Seam in the past?
