When 48 young graduates walked through the gates of Meridian Port Services (MPS) Ltd in January 2026, many knew little about the sophisticated operations behind one of West Africa's leading container terminals. Over the next six months, they embarked on an immersive learning journey that challenged their thinking, developed practical skills, and prepared them for successful professional careers.
As they completed the 2026 MPS Graduate Trainee Programme, they left with far more than certificates. They gained hands-on experience, a Lean mindset, and the confidence to tackle real operational challenges.
The programme represents another important milestone in MPS's commitment to youth development and education, a key pillar of the company's Corporate Social Responsibility agenda.
Investing in the Next Generation
Recognising that few graduates have the opportunity to experience the maritime industry first-hand, MPS launched its Graduate Trainee Programme in September 2024 to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice.
Open to undergraduate and postgraduate students from various tertiary institutions, the programme offers practical exposure across Operations, Planning, Finance, Procurement, Information Technology and Asset Maintenance.
More than an internship, it is a long-term investment in Ghana's future workforce. As port infrastructure is built to serve generations, preparing future professionals to operate, improve and sustain these critical assets is both a responsibility and a necessity.
Learning Through Lean
Central to the programme is the MPS Lean Management System, which equips trainees with internationally recognised principles of continuous improvement, structured problem-solving and accountability.
After an introduction to Lean methodology, trainees joined departments aligned with their fields of study and worked alongside experienced professionals. They were then challenged to analyse existing processes, identify opportunities for improvement and propose practical solutions to enhance operational performance.
This approach transformed participants from observers into active contributors, encouraging innovation while reinforcing the culture of continuous improvement.
From Ideas to Innovation
The final presentations demonstrated the trainees' ability to apply Lean thinking to real business challenges.
Among the projects presented were:
A low-cost temperature and vibration monitoring prototype for Ship-to-Shore crane hoist motors and reducers.
A digital requisition platform for the Stores Department to improve efficiency and reduce processing time.
A solution to strengthen accountability, traceability and security of terminal assets.
Each project focused on improving efficiency, reducing waste and creating value. The quality of the presentations impressed the Senior Management Team, who commended the trainees for their creativity, professionalism and practical solutions.
Building Careers and Character
Alongside technical knowledge, the programme strengthened leadership, teamwork, communication, emotional intelligence and workplace professionalism.
Reflecting on the experience, one trainee from the Asset Maintenance Department said:
"This graduate training programme has given me practical knowledge and the confidence to perform technical tasks successfully. I am grateful to MPS for the opportunity to learn, grow and prepare myself to make a meaningful impact."
Human Resource Manager, Ms. Julia Acquah, highlighted the programme's broader purpose:
"Learning in a dynamic operational environment enables participants to think critically, work within internationally recognised systems and develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom. We hope this experience will have a lasting impact on their careers while contributing to Ghana's national development."
A Legacy Beyond Training
The graduates completed the programme not only with valuable workplace experience but also having contributed meaningful improvements to MPS operations.
For MPS, the Graduate Trainee Programme is more than a talent development initiative. It is an investment in the future of Ghana's maritime industry, building a pipeline of professionals equipped with the technical expertise, innovative mindset and leadership qualities needed to sustain world-class port operations for generations to come.
The six-month programme may have come to an end, but for these 48 graduates, it marks the beginning of careers defined by excellence, continuous improvement and a commitment to making a lasting impact.
